This bulletin is the second of a series begun in 1948, designed to present detailed records of the commercial fish catch of the state. The statistics set forth were derived from records obtained only from licensed commercial fishermen and contain no data pertaining to small unlicensed units of fishing gear, or to the sports fishery.

This "Survey of Research and Scientific Services in East Arica 1947-1956" has been prepared by Dr. E. B. Worthington, who held the post of Scientific Secretary in the Office of the Chief Secretary to the East African Governor's Conference and subsequently in the Administrator's Office of the East Mrica High Commission during the period January, 1947-May, 1951. Dr. Worthington is now Secretary General of the Scientific Council for, Arica South of the Sahara

BUTLER1 found that almost no heating could be observed in herring meal packed in impregnated, airtight paper bags. The present paper reports from application of this method to meal produced from Norwegian summercaught herring. The fat of this herring has a relatively high iodine number (140-150), and the meal usually develop heat when stored in the commenly used 50 kg's paper bags made from 5 layers "craft-paper". The following types of bags were tried: Mark 1A - 4 layers craft-paper - 1 layer asphalt. Mark 2A - 3 layers craft-paper - 2 layers asphalt. Mark T - 3 layers craft-paper -1 layer "thiocol". Mark V - 5 layers craft-paper. Both types of asphalt impregnated bags were found to give allmost complete prevention towards heat. The bag impregnated with "thiocol" -a polysulfide resine- could not prevent an increase in the temperature to the same level as that of meal packed in non-impregnated bags. Ved undersøkelser over holdbarheten av brugde, håbrand og laks ved temperaturer like ved 0° C (- 1° C og den temperatur som oppnås ved dekking med is) kunne påvises at der omsettes større mengder urinstoff og trimetylaminoksyd enn der kan redegjøres for ved den mengde ammoniakk og trimetylamin som dannes. Ved pigghå, håkjerring, skate og torsk kunne slike omsetninger ikke påvises. Årsaken til disse omsettinger hos brugde og håbrand og laks er foreløpig ukjent, men vi vil gjøre oppmerksom på fenomenet, da det såvidt oss bekjent, ikke er iakttatt tidligere. ENGLISH Storage experiments performed with muscles of porbeagle, basking shark and salmon at temperatures near 0° C indicated that more urea and more trimethylamineoxide were splitted than could be estimated by analyses of ammonia and trimethylamine. The same phænomenon did not take place with muscles of cod, greenland shark, skatewings and dogfish.
