An empirical model of fishery dynamics
1989
Deacon, R.T.
The multiple-cohort approach to population dynamics is seldom used for empirical analysis of catch and effort data due to the complexity of the resulting models and to limitations on available data. The present paper addresses these problems by adopting a discrete time framework and simplifying assumptions for growth, mortality, and recruitment. The result is a readily estimated econometric model of the commercial catch that is consistent with the multiple-cohort paradigm. This model is applied to catch and effort data for the California abalone fishery and the estimates obtained are used to analyze policy.

Fisheries resources management in Southeast Asia: why bothers? Texto completo
1989
Pauly, D.
Because, in general, the economies of Southeast Asian countries are "developing", policy-makers generally assume that the fisheries sector also needs to be "developed" through soft loans, tax rebates, construction of ports, etc. This contribution shows that such classical fisheries development methods are no longer appropriate for fisheries in the ASEAN countries, where overfishing is the rule rather than the exception. A rationale and some strategies for rolling back excessive fishing effort in over-fished areas are briefly presented.

[Marine anthropology and fisheries management]
1989
Pascual Fernandez, J.J.
Como dicen Miller y Van Maanen (1979) "Boats don't fish, people do"

1989
Pinkerton, Evelyn
"Written by anthropologists, environmental planners, biologists, economists, fisheries managers, and tribal and governmental leaders, this is the first book to describe the evolution of co-operative fisheries management between fishermen and government in Canada and the USA . The contributions examine both the process of achieving co-management arrangements and the benefits that result. Some of the benefits include more efficient and equitable management, less conflict between governments and fishermen, and better co-operation between groups of fishermen. As the cost of centralized government rises, and as resource-dependent regions demand greater control over development, co-operative management will become one of the most important means of regulating the use of certain natural resources. "Co-operative management of local fisheries" looks at successes and failures in these arrangements for shared decision-making and it offers some guide-lines for viable co-operative management. 1989
Rahman, M.M. | Hossain, M.A. | Miah, M.A.M. | Rahman, M.M.
The main thrust of the study was to investigate the impact of fisheries knowledge of the farmers towards fish culture management. An attempt was also taken to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their fisheries knowledge towards fish culture management practices. The selected characteristics included age, education, pond size, pond tenure, income, organizational participation, extension contact and fatalism. It was observed that among the survey farmers 46% possessed low, 38% medium and only 16% high knowledge in different aspects of fish culture. The Chi-square test showed that the organizational participation and extension contact of the farmers had significant positive relationship with their fisheries knowledge regarding fish culture management practices.
