Social change over most of the globe moves from lesser to greater organization, from agricultural to industrial life. Yet Gandhi and his disciple, Vinoba Bhave, en visioned a different type of social order, one in which agricultural village life would be perfected to meet the needs of all its members. Bhave's Bhoodan movement of land redistribution is a direct means to this end. The author, Romesh Shah, studied in Bombay and presently is an instructor in New York University's Division of General Education; he is also a group counsellor at the Henry Street Settlement in New York City.

The relative efficiency of various fractions of a calcitic limestone was studied under greenhouse conditions. Pure calcium carbonate, a commercial sample of agricultural limestone, and 6 particle-size fractions separated from this commercial sample were applied at different rates to 3 acid soils. The soils were sampled at various times and the pH determined. The changes in pH with time followed an expression of the form, pHf = pHₒ + b Log (1 + t). The factor b varied with rate of application, particle size, and soil. The limestone particles in the 10- to 28-mesh size fraction were, in general, 14% as effective as those in the < 100-mesh fraction, and particles > 10 mesh were essentially of no value. The efficiency of the commercial sample of agricultural limestone was approximately equal to that exhibited by the 40- to 60-mesh fraction of the sample. The results indicate that, for practical purposes, a large portion of commercial limestone should be ground fine enough to pass a 40-mesh sieve.

Meeker Papers consist of reports, speeches, diplomas, slides, and photographs from conferences attended by Meeker, as well as areas where he and his family lived while he was an agricultural attaché. There is information on agriculture in the United States and the U.S.S.R. In addition, the following places are represented in photographs or slides: the Aegean Islands, Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Canary Islands, Denmark, England, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, South America, the Soviet Union, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and United States.

By order of the State Service for Agricultural Restoration, the whole area of the Delta Islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen was mapped to obtain data on inundated soils. Beside soil maps and descriptions a review of the holocene geology was included. A reconstruction was made of post-Boreal incursions and recessions, their periodicity and characteristics. Soil properties (CaCO 3 content, grain-size distribution) could be correlated with conditions during sedimentation.Decalcification, a process that plays an important part in soil genesis in these tidal flats and tidal marshes, was studied by comparing polders of different age allowing for local effects. The rate of decalcification could be estimated to 1 % in 80- 90 years. The influences of fresh and saline seepage on the profile and of salt susceptibility were established. From trial harvests and data on farm rents, conclusions were drawn on the suitability of the soil types, but many other factors often caused irregularities.
