A series of 45 trials were conducted to investigate some aspects of seed quality and manuring practices on the yield and returns from white potato. The response to the use of certified seed in place of the farmers' own seed of the same cultivar varied, being primarily dependent on the quality of the farmers' seed. The use of larger seedpieces (35 to 55 mm) in place of the farmers' small seed gave a positive improvement in yields and monetary returns. The use of whole seed in place of cut seed for the dry season gave no improvement in yields or returns. The use of alternatives organic fertilizer gave no consistent beneficial effects whether considered agronomically or economically. Commercial fertilizer applied to the seedbed instead of as an a side-dressing at hilling-up showed beneficial agronomic and economic effects as did the use of traditional nitrogen and potash as side-dressing at hilling-up. The use of lime gave contradictory results.
