Clinical features of ceroid lipofuscinosis in Border Collie dogs [congenital nervous storage disease]
1991
Studdert, V.P. | Mitten, R.W. (Melbourne Univ., Werribee (Australia). Veterinary Clinical Centre)
Ceroid lipofuscinosis was diagnosed by histopathological and histochemical findings in 17 related dogs and by clinical signs in 6 of their litter mates. Behavioural changes, first hyperactivity and later aggression, commenced at 16 to 23 months of age. Motor abnormalities and blindness were observed at the mean age of about 21 months. All dogs were euthanased 1 to 6 months after the onset of clinical signs, mean age about 23 months. Pedigree data supported an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance.

Cimanowski, J. | Lewandowska, M. | Rejnus, M. | Profic-Alwasiak, H. (Instytut Sadownictwa i Kwiaciarstwa, Skierniewice (Poland))
The research on the control of late apple scab was carried out in 3 experiment stations. Fruit with apple scab spots put into storage always demonstrated a development of the disease. Most of tested fungicides applied 2 or 4 weeks before fruit harvest restricted disease development, but this effect varied from season to season. The most reliable fungicides appeared to be: Delan SC 750 (dithianon) and Kaptan (captan)

1991
Hossain, M.J. | Rashid, M.M. (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Inst., Joydebpur (Bangladesh). Tuber Crops Research Centre)
Storage quality of three sizes of tubers of eight TSP progenies against standard variety Cardinal has been studied for 120 days (April to July) under natural storage condition. Weightloss of tubers due to transpiration and respiration was 23.93% in TPS progenies and 11.95% in Cardinal with average monthly loss of 5.98% and 2.99% respectively. Small size tubers were found to suffer most from dehydration. Erwinia sp. Fusarium sp. have been identified to cause rot disease of tubers in storage. The incidence of soft rot and dry rot were 33.40% and 34.15%, respectively. No rot was observed in Cardinal during the period of study. Maximum rottage loss was recorded in large size tubers. Tubers of the TPS progenies sprouted earlier than Cardinal. Maximum number of sprouts per tuber and length of the longest sprout were recorded in TPS progenies. Tubers of TPS progenies shrivelled earlier than Cardinal.

1991
Porter, D.M. | Wright, F.S. | Taber, R.A. | Smith, D.H.
Cylindrocladium crotalariae, the causal agent of Cylindrocladium black rot (CBR) of peanut (Arachis hypogaea), was isolated at a much higher frequency from peanut seed (retained by a screen 6.4 X 25.4 mm) shortly after curing than 7 mo after initial isolation assay, when the frequency decreased approximately 87%. The frequency of C. crotalariae in seed of the cultivars Florigiant, VA 81B, and NC 6 was 15.4, 23.4, and 21.8%, respectively, before storage, and 1.6, 4.0, and 5.6%, respectively, after storage at ambient conditions for 7 mo in an unheated building. Under similar disease pressure, seed of NC 8C, a peanut cultivar with resistance to C. crotalariae, was colonized less frequently than seed of cultivars Florigiant, VA 81B, and NC 6. Seed colonization was directly correlated to incidence of CBR in the field. Seed colonization increased as disease incidence increased. Significant differences were noted among cultivars of Florigiant, VA 81B, and NC 6 in the isolation frequency of C. crotalariae. Colonization by C. crotalariae was similar in seed stored at ambient and refrigerated (5 C) conditions. The fungus was not isolated from peanut seed treated with seed protectants, Hyphae of C. crotalariae ramified both intracellularly and intercellularly throughout the testae of discolored seed. In seed with dark brown testae, hyphae were observed in the cotyledonary tissues.

Foodborne disease outbreaks in nursing homes, 1975 through 1987
1991
Levine, W.C. | Smart, J.F. | Archer, D.L. | Bean, N.H. | Tauxe, R.V.
Objective. To describe the epidemiology of foodborne disease outbreaks in nursing homes and to identify where preventive efforts might be focused. Data Sources. Reports by state and local health departments of foodborne disease outbreaks occurring from January 1, 1975, through December 31,1987. Study Selection. Foodborne disease outbreaks reported to the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA, on standard investigation forms. Data Extraction. Each foodborne disease outbreak report was examined by an epidemiologist or statistician. Outbreaks were considered to have a known pathogen if confirmed by laboratory tests, and a known vehicle when an epidemiologic investigation implicated a specific food item. Data Synthesis. From 1975 through 1987, 26 states reported 115 outbreaks of foodborne disease in nursing homes, causing illness in 4944 persons and death in 51. These outbreaks represented 2% of all reported foodborne disease outbreaks and 19% of outbreak-associated deaths in this period. Of 52 outbreaks with a known cause, Salmonella was the most frequently reported pathogen, accounting for 52% of outbreaks and 81% of deaths. Salmonella enteritidis outbreaks accounted for 56% of the Salmonella-associated deaths since 1981. The implicated food vehicles in S enteritidis outbreaks were made with eggs or prepared with equipment contaminated with eggs. Staphylococcal foodborne disease was the next most commonly identified cause, accounting for 23% of outbreaks. Conclusions. Since the elderly are at high risk for serious morbidity from foodborne disease, nursing homes should practice careful food handling, preparation, and storage procedures; provide education for food handlers; and have active infection control programs to rapidly detect and control outbreaks of foodborne disease.

Evaluation of total serum bile acid concentrations for the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disease in cattle
1991
West, H.J.
Serum bile acid concentrations were measured in 41 clinically healthy cattle of different breeds. There was no diurnal variation in values and age and sex had no effect. There was no significant difference between serum and plasma bile acid concentrations in clinically healthy cattle. Serum bile acids were stable on storage at -20 degrees C. The total serum bile acid concentrations, together with other tests of hepatic disease, were evaluated in cattle with various types of hepatobiliary disease (hepatic lipidosis, hepatic abscessation, leptospirosis, biliary calculi, fascioliasis), respiratory, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, and in various other conditions not affecting the liver. Total serum bile acids were the most specific and sensitive indicators of a wide variety of hepatic diseases and were significantly correlated with the degree of clinical illness.

1991
Cimanowski, J. (Instytut Sadownictwa i Kwiaciarstwa, Skierniewice (Poland)) | Pietrzak, B.
The observations on the occurrence of brown rot were maintained in commercial apple orchards consisting of different varieties of apples in northern, central and southern parts of Poland. Generally infections were quite mild. The control measures undertaken against this disease resulted in liminting it on apples in the orchard and in storage. The best results gave Topsin M (methyltiofanat) and Punch 40 EC (flusilazol). Good field control was obtained with Ronilan (winclozoline), Baycor (bitertanol) and Trifmine (triflumizol). Most of the fungicides applied once inhibited spring sporodochia development on mummified fruit

Purification, characterization and serological detection of virus-like particles associated with banana bunchy top disease in Australia
1991
Thomas, J.E. | Dietzgen, R.G.
Isometric virus-like particles, 18 nm in diameter, have been isolated from banana (Musa spp.) affected by bunchy top disease in Australia. Banana bunchy top disease-associated virus-like particles (BBTV) banded as a single component with buoyant density of 1.28 to 1.29 g/ml in CS2SO4 and sedimented at about 46S in isokinetic sucrose density gradients. The A260/A280 of purified preparations was about 1.33. A single coat protein of Mr 20500 was identified with antibodies to BBTV particles from Australia. Single-stranded DNA of about 1 kb as well as ssRNA smaller than 0.45 kb was also associated with the particles. A polyclonal antiserum to BBTV, suitable for use in ELISA, was prepared. Stability and antigenicity of purified BBTV was impaired by storage at pH greater than or equal to 8.5 and freezing at -20 degrees C without protectants. BBTV was detected by double antibody sandwich-ELISA with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, in field-infected banana plants, single aphids from an infective colony, and in experimentally aphid-inoculated banana plants. After transmission of BBTV particles by aphids from a banana bunchy top disease-affected to an uninfected banana plant, the disease was induced and BBTV was detected by ELISA in symptomatic leaves only. BBTV isolates from Australia, Taiwan, People's Republic of China, Tonga, Western Samoa and Hawaii were found to be serologically related, which suggests a common aetiology for the disease.
