The plant hunters
1970
Tyler-Whittle, Michael Sidney
From Queen Hatshepsut's journey to the land of Punt in 1482 B.C. to modern botanical expeditions, here is a vivid account of botanists, their travels, and the interesting, valuable specimens they brought back to their gardens and laboratories. Mr. Whittle first surveys the history of collecting prior to the time of Nathaniel Ward, the inventor of the portable greenhouse, then explains the scientific techniques of plant hunting developed by Ward. And, finally, he tells of the "Scramble for Green Treasure" to the far corners of the earth that followed in Ward's wake and he explores the gradual development of the methods botanists are using now.

THE Effectiveness of anthocoris nemorum and a. confusus (hemiptera: anthocoridae) as predators of the sycamore aphid, drepanosiphum platanoides: 1 the number of aphids consumed during development
1970
RUSSEL, R.J.
Nymphs of Anthocoris nemorum and Anthocoris confusus were reared in the laboratory, using the sycamore aphid Drepanosiphum platanoides as food. Most of the food required for development is consumed during the last three instars. Individuals which developed in the shortest time consumed least food during development, and weighed least at maturation. Comparison of the weights of field and laboratory reared animals indicates that they consume similar amounts of food during development, and the number of sycamore aphids required for development in the field is estimated. It is suggested that under natural conditions, the number of anthocorids which reach maturity is dependent upon the number of young aphids available during the early stages of the anthocorids' development.

Dairy Industry Trends in the N.S.W. Milk Solids Region, 1946-67
1970
Laut, Peter
This article traces the changes which occurred in the N.S.W. Milk Solids region over the 20 year period 1946-67. Variables examined are number of dairy farms, number of cows, volume of milk products sold, number of cows per farm, milk production per cow and per farm. Finally, three hypothesis are tested concerning the reasons for the changes in these variables.

1970
Fulford, R.M.
An analysis was made of bud development on apple spurs sprayed with copper sulphate in late spring. The treatments caused the spur buds to break into a second flush of growth and eventually to form a new resting bud. The failure of these later buds to become fruit buds was correlated with the time in the season when they began to form, and was determined by the number of leaves and bud scales preceding the buds. The number of leaves in the second flush was related to the extent to which shoot tips and spurs were killed by the sprays; the number of leaves in the first flush and the number of bud-scales between these flushes of growth was also altered by the chemical. The factors affecting the number of nodes in each of these zones of growth are discussed, and it is suggested the sprays reduced the level of endogenous auxins in the leaves and endogenous gibberellins in the shoot tips. Differences associated with the vigour of the trees and with seasonal factors were also observed. The difficulties in estimating these factors limit the commercial value of this technique.
