Body weights at fixed ages of crossbred calves of Friesian, Jersey and Lanka parentage

Body weight data from a crossbreeding experiment involving Friesian (F), Jersey (J) and Lanka (L) breeds of cattle were used to determine, the weights of eight genotypic groups of calves at birth and at 2, 4, 6, 12 and 18 months of age. The sample comprised 325 male and female calves for weights at the first four ages, where as 173 female calves only were considered for weights at 12 and 18 months of age. The calves sired by F and Friesian x Lanka (FL) bulls were heavier at birth than those sired by J and Jersey x Lanka (JL) bulls. The calves born during the wet season (Oct - Feb) were 0.8 kg heavier than those born during the dry season (Mar - Sep). The overall mean +- SE of the body weights at 2, 4, 6, 12 and 18 months were 32.5 +- 0.4, 45.8 +- 0.6, 58.0 +- 0.8, 81.0 +- 2.5 and 100.6 +- 3.0 kg, respectively. Breed of sire significantly affected the weights at 4 and 6 month0763s (p0.05), but not at the other ages under consideration.
