The highland banana locally known as matooke in Uganda, displays a high level of phenotypic variations. The crop has established itself over centuries, as a dominant feature in the cropping system of the region. Morphological characters have a certain amount of subjectivity which is made more certain by the environment. Futhurmore, these variations can occur within a period of one crop cycle. These changes in the crop have resulted into various synonyms of cultuvars, a problem which remains to be solved to enable future researchers of the on-going programme is to develop a reliable and applicable system of classification and to find field techniques of identifying these bananas. Studies were carried out in banana growing districts to find out what germplasm is available, how varied and to assess the synoymous nomenclature of the crop
