Variation in the highland bananas of Uganda and prospects for improvement

The highland banana locally known as matooke in Uganda, displays a high level of phenotypic variations. The crop has established itself over centuries, as a dominant feature in the cropping system of the region. Morphological characters have a certain amount of subjectivity which is made more certain by the environment. Futhurmore, these variations can occur within a period of one crop cycle. These changes in the crop have resulted into various synonyms of cultuvars, a problem which remains to be solved to enable future researchers of the on-going programme is to develop a reliable and applicable system of classification and to find field techniques of identifying these bananas.
