Studies on pig raising system in eastern terai of Nepal

A survey was conducted on the pig raising system during the fiscal year 2055/056 in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts. The purpose of the survey was to collect information on management system of pig husbandry. All together 90 pig raising households were surveyed through predesigned questionnaire format. After analysing the data 87 percent of the farmers were found raising local pigs while 10 percent and 3 percent were found crossbred and improved breed respectively. Maximum number of pig found was 14 and minimum was 3 heads. 75 percent poor, 20 percent medium and 5 percent rich farmers were found involved in pig raising. Pigs were kept under intensive, tethered and free-range system of management. 52 percenr farmers were recorded providing home made brewery residues. Similarly 35 percent farmers were feeding their pigs homemade concentrate mixture, kitchen waste, green vegetable, pumpkin, karkalo and other weeds. However, 13 percent were producing only cereal by products including rice bran, maize bran, wheat bran and broken cereal grains. The feeding was recorded 2-3 times daily. Most of the sheds observed were made of stone and wood flooring with tiles and thatched roof. Feeding trough were made locally either wood or cement. The pen were found unhygenic condition in their management system like troughs were normally found uncleaned and pig manure was not disposed regularly. Under this management system, natural service were recorded at the age of 11 to 12 months which farrowed 14 to 16 months of age. However, litter size was obtained 8 to 10 piglets/farrowing. The mortality rate of their piglets varied from 20 to 25 percent before weaning. The health care and managerial practices were found being neglected.
