La autora, en observaciones e investigaciones preliminares, encontró, en zonas tipicamente tabacaleras, además del mosaico común del tabaco (TMV), una afección, al parecer virosa, semejante al etch virus de los EE.UU., de la cual fueron estudiadas algunas características físicas y se realizaron transmisiones exitosas con Myzus persicae. Se determinaron algunos hospederos de la enfermedad, incluyendo el tomate, por la importancia económica de dicha enfermedad en este cultivo. Fue iniciado el estudio de la enfermedad falso orobanche (false broomrape), que hace pocos años ha comenzado a manifestarse en la región tabacalera de Las Villas. La autora hace diversas sugerencias sobre la necesidad de estudios y experiencias sobre estas y otras enfermedades del tabaco, como el brocado chino de Ceilán, y sobre el uso racional de los preparados químicos empleados como protectores de las cosechas de tabaco y su influencia en la calidad comercial de este.
