The forage value number consists of the evaluation of forage content values (energy evaluation depending on vegetation stage) and of a sensory evaluation of forage quality (taste, structure, color, hygienic load, forage composition and forage contamination). Thus, only by unification of both important complexes a correct estimation of forage acceptance as well as its nutritive value can be achieved to attain a balanced ration. The forage value number developed by the Institute of Plant Production and Landscape Science of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein enables farmers to accomplish the forage estimate of many different feed batches by themselves.
