Crop losses occurred in varieties tending to early bud burst. Initial investigations suggested that damage occurred after extreme weather conditions, with either salt or strong wind or both being responsible. The study found that the damage resembled artificially induced wind damage, and salt concentrations greater than those present during the storm period applied directly to vines did not produce symptoms.
