The status of hospital dietetics in China is reflective of its economic development, which seems to be on the upswing. Training of dietitians is limited; menu planning is dependent on local food availability; foods are purchased and prepared daily; and, although medical care is usually free, hospital meals are not. Urban hospitals provide some therapeutic diets and parenteral feeding. Hospital employees work 6 days a week. Pay scales are equalized by years of service.
