Sensitivity of Erwinia amylovora to high temperatures--possible use of heat treatment for plant propagation material

Using 11 strains of different origins the sinsitivity of Erwinia amylovora to high temperatures (30 degrees C, 35 degrees C, 38 degrees C, 40 degrees C) was tested. A rapid decline of the bacterial population occurred at temperatures higher than 30 degrees C and all bacteria were killed after 23h at 40 degrees C. Harmful effects on noninfected pome fruit scions incubated at 38 degrees C, 95% ralative humidity, were observed after 5 days. First investigations with Erwinia amylovora infected plant material showed a certain letal effect on the pathogen inside plant tissues at this range of temperatures.
