Glycosuria was reduced in 19 diabetics receiving high carbohydrate intakes supplemented with fiber in the form of guar. Carbohydrate intakes ranged from 22-61% of total calories, in a total of 24, 5-day study periods. Glycosuria decreased by 64% with high-fiber diets where carbohydrates represented more than 40% of total calories. No significant reductions were observed with diets of lower carbohydrate content. These findings suggest that high-fiber diets advocated in the treatment of diabetes should be given in association with high carbohydrate intakes. Since most fiber-rich foods are also high in carbohydrates, the use of high-fiber diets would permit diabetics to eat more starchy crbohydrates without losing diabetic control.
