The management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Nigeria and most developing countries has remained a major public health challenge, thus creating the need for reliable and environmentally-acceptable alternatives. This study focuses on composting assessment as a viable recovery alternative for MSW in six States of Southwest Nigeria, namely: Ekiti, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos. Extensive literature review has been carried out to understand the waste generation patterns in these states. Reported literature data has been assessed for sustainability of composting strategy in terms of organic waste streams, amenable of biotransformation as well as in terms of return through energy saving and material recovery. A life-cycle framework has been used to estimate GHG emissions, available nutrients, and potential compost production, instead of landfill in each region. Results show significant potential compost production of 895,659-, 255,267-, 153,423-, 117,468-, 113,094- and 112, 397-m3/yr for Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti, respectively. It has been deduced from the study that composting would be very beneficial to the economy as its product would boost agriculture production while reducing the budget spent on fertilizer annually.

The removal efficiency of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is the biggest challenge for the treatment of erythromycin fermentation residue (EFR). In the current research, 0% (control), 10% (T1), and 30% (T2) spray-dried EFR were composted with bulking materials, consisting of cattle manure and maize straw, for 30 days. Environmental factors and bacterial community on the behaviors of ARGs were further investigated. Apart from the high levels of erythromycin, the electrical conductivities were also increased by 66.7% and 291.7% in the samples of T1 and T2, respectively. After 30 days of composting, total ARGs in the samples of control were decreased by 78.1%–91.2%, but those of T1 and T2 were increased 14.5–16.7- and 38.5–68.7-fold. ARGs related to ribosomal protection (erm) dominated the samples of T1 and T2 at D 13 and 30, especially that ermF accounted for more than 80% of the total ARGs. Furthermore, the results of bacterial community revealed that EFR promoted the growth of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, but inhibited that of Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia and Chloroflexi. Network analysis revealed that the enriched ARGs had strong correlation with seven bacterial genera, including Halomonas, Oceanobacillus, and Alcaligenes, most of which are halotolerant. Above all, erythromycin combined with high salinity can have synergistic effect on the enrichment of ARGs and their hosts.

Combining hydrothermal treatment and composting is an effective method to dispose of penicillin fermentation residue (PFR), but the safety and related mechanism are still unclear. In this study, penicillin solution was hydrothermally treated to decipher its degradation mechanism, and then hydrothermally treated PFR (HT-PFR) was mixed with bulking agents at ratios of 2:0 (CK), 2:1.5 (T1), and 2:5 (T2) to determine the absolute abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the succession of bacterial community. Results showed that penicillin was degraded to several new compounds without the initial lactam structure after hydrothermal treatment. During composting, temperature and pH of the composts increased with the raising of HT-PFR proportion, except the pH at days 2. After 52 days of composting, the absolute copies of ARGs (blaTEM, blaCMY2, and blaSFO) and the relative abundance of bacteria related to pathogens were reduced significantly (P < 0.05). Especially, the total amount of ARGs in the samples of CK and T1 were decreased to equal level (around 5 log₁₀ copies/g), which indicated that more ARGs were degraded in the latter by the composting process. In the CK samples, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria accounted for ~69.8% of the total bacteria, but they were gradually replaced by Firmicutes with increasing proportions of HT-PFR, which can be caused by the high protein content in PFR. Consisting with bacterial community, more gram-positive bacteria were observed in T1 and T2, and most of them are related to manganese oxidation and chitinolysis. As composting proceeded, bacteria having symbiotic or pathogenic relationships with animals and plants were reduced, but those related to ureolysis and cellulolysis were enriched. Above all, hydrothermal treatment is effective in destroying the lactam structure of penicillin, which makes that most ARGs and pathogenic bacteria are eliminated in the subsequent composting.

In this study, functional microbial sequencing, quantitative PCR, and phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt) were employed to understand the microbial mechanisms related to the effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) and bamboo vinegar (BV) on the degradation of organic matter (OM) and methane (CH₄) emissions during composting. BC + BV resulted in the highest degradation of OM. BV was most effective treatment in controlling CH₄ emissions and it significantly reduced the abundance of the mcrA gene. Methanobrevibacter, Methanosarcina, and Methanocorpusculum were closely related to CH₄ emissions during the thermophilic composting period. PICRUSt analysis showed that BC and/or BV enhanced the metabolism associated with OM degradation and reduced CH₄ metabolism. Structural equation modeling indicated that BC + BV strongly promoted the metabolic activity of microorganisms, which had a positive effect on CH₄ emissions. Together these results suggest that BC + BV may be a suitable composting strategy if the aerobic conditions can be effectively improved during the thermophilic composting period.

Composting is a solid waste management alternative that avoids the emission of methane associated with its disposal in landfill and reduces or eliminates the need for chemical fertilisers if compost is applied. The main objective of this study was to analyse the environmental burdens of composting as a way to achieve a more circular valorisation of wine waste. To do so, with the purpose of identifying optimal operational conditions and determining the “hotspots” of the process, the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was used. The consumption of diesel fuel in machinery was determined to be the main critical point in the environmental effects of the system, followed by the transport and distribution of the compost. After the application of compost instead of mineral fertilisers, corn, tomato and strawberry crops would have a better environmental performance in most impact categories. In this sense, a maximum improvement of 65% in terrestrial ecotoxicity is achieved in strawberry cultivation. In light of the results obtained, it is demonstrated that composting is a suitable way of organic waste valorisation according to Circular Economy principles.

This study proposes an integrated cattle breeding and cultivation system that provides zero emission and sustainable livelihood for the community in rural areas. The proposed integrated farming system improves agricultural productivity and environmental and sanitation conditions, minimizes the amount of waste, and increases the family income up to 41.55%. Several waste types can be recycled and transformed into valuable products, such as energy for cooking, organic fertilizer for crops, and cattle feed for breeding. Wastewater effluent from the biogas tank can be treated by biochar and results show that it then meets the standards for irrigation purposes. Also, the waste flow from cattle breeding supplies enough nutrients to cultivate plants, and the plants grown supply are adequate food for the 30 cows living on the farm. This research shows that the use of an integrated farming system could achieve zero-emission goal. Thereby, it provides a sustainable livelihood for cattle breeding family farms. The proposed integrated cattle breeding and cultivation system improves agricultural productivity, environmental and increases the farmer income up to 41.55%.

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) play critical roles in transferring antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among different microorganisms in the environment. This study aimed to explore the fate of MGEs during chicken manure (CM) and bovine manure (BM) composting to assess horizontal transfer risks of ARGs. The results showed that the removal efficiency of MGEs during CM composting was significantly higher than that during BM composting, because the potential host bacteria of MGEs were eliminated largely during CM composting. Meanwhile, these potential host bacterial communities are significantly influenced by pH, NH4+, NO3− and total N, which can be used to regulate host bacterial communities to remove MGEs during composting. Projection pursuit regression further confirmed that composting can effectively reduce the horizontal transfer risk of ARGs, especially for CM composting. These results identified the critical roles of host bacterial communities in MGEs removal during composting of different animal manures.

Livestock manure is a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a potential risk to environment and human health. However, there has been no optimization study about the comprehensive composting treatment for livestock manure ARGs based on multiple operation factors. In this study, anaerobic composting of swine manure in light was conducted under different combined conditions of composting time, temperature, water content, pH, heavy metal passivators and wheat straw. The diversity and relative abundance of ARGs in the compost were detected using high throughput quantitative real-time PCR, and the concentrations of antibiotics and heavy metals were determined. The results showed that under the optimized conditions (composting time, 30 d; temperature, 50 °C; water content, 50%; pH 9.0; heavy metal passivators and wheat straw), compared with the control, the detected number of ARGs and mobile genetic elements in the compost was reduced by 45% and 27.3%, and their relative abundance decreased by 33.9% and 36.9%, respectively. Moreover, the exchangeable heavy metal content of the compost declined by 34.7–57.1%, and the antibiotic level decreased by 28.8–77.8%. This study proposes that synergistic effects of key parameters can effectively mitigate the combined contamination of ARGs, antibiotics, and heavy metals in swine manure.Optimized parameters (anaerobic composting time 30 d, temperature 50 °C, water content 50%, pH 9.0) effectively mitigated the combined pollution of ARGs, antibiotics, and heavy metals in swine manure.

The application of compost in agriculture has led to the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs) in the soil environment. In this study, the response of ARGs and MRGs to bamboo charcoal (BC) and bamboo vinegar (BV) during aerobic composting was investigated. Results showed that BC + BV treatment reduced the abundances of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) during the thermophilic period, as well as achieved the lowest rebound during the cooling period. BC + BV promoted the growth of Firmicutes, thereby facilitating the thermophilic period of composting. The rebound of ARGs and MGEs can be explained by increasing the abundance of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria at the end of composting. Composting reduced the abundances of MRGs comprising pcoA, tcrB, and cueO, whereas cusA and copA indicated the selective pressure imposed by heavy metals on bacteria. The fate of ARGs was mainly driven by MGEs, and heavy metals explained most of the variation in MRGs. Interestingly, nitrogen conversion also had an important effect on ARG and MRG profiles. Our current findings suggest that the addition of BC + BV during compost preparation is an effective method in controlling the mobility of ARGs and MRGs, thereby reducing the environmental problems.
