The cell surface is a logical place to look for possible causes of the breakdown in cellular interactions that characterize the gametophytic incompatibility of fertilization. Indications that changes in cellular glycolipids were related to malignant process or growth inhibition or viral transformation lead us to study the possible role of the glycosphingolipids (GSL). Those GSL are thought to be relatively tissue specific compared, to say, phospholipids. The sensitive metabolic control and their antigenic properties apparently expressed at the cell surface make glycolipids of considerable interest. Previous data implicate them as receptors for a wide variety of molecules which can influence intracellular events. We report here the identification of the GSL of pollen and unpollinated styles of Petunia hybrida self-incompatible species, in order to study further the evolution of those GSL during the incompatibility phenomenon
