Study of Eublemma amabilis, (Moore) (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) a major predator of lac and lac insect, Kerria lacca (kerr)

Eublemma amabilis, (Moore) is very destructive to lac. This predator destroy lac insect and lac incrustation. The moth is generally white pinkish in colour. The female is bigger and brighter in colour than the male. The moth lays grey white, round eggs depressed in the centre. The newly emerged larva is creamy whitish in colour with broad flat head. The larva gets in the lac insect either through one of the openings in the test or by tunnelling a hole through the incrustation. A single larva damage 40-50 mature cells prior to pupation. The pupa is obtect adecticous type and dark brown in colour. It has six generations in a year and causes comparatively more injury to the Kartik crop than to the baishaki. The morphology and physiology of this predator were studied. The predator has several natural enemies.
