Elevated ozone levels in ambient air in and around Copenhagen (Denmark) indicated by means of tobacco indicator plants [Nicotiana tabacum L. var. Bel-C and Bel-W3, photochemical smog component]

Biological impact, occurrence and distribution of the photochemical smog-component ozone by means of Nicotiana tabacum (L.) var. Bel-C and Bel-W3 indicator plants were studied on 14 locations in and around Copenhagen, Denmark, from June to September 1977. Six very sensitive Bel-W3 plants and four moderately susceptible Bel-C plants were placed on each location. Half of the plants were exchanged every three weeks. The ozone injury appeared as characteristic flecks and, eventually, larger damaged areas on the leaves. The mean coefficient of variation on the extent of damage was 32% for three identically exposed Bel-W3 plants. Several episodes indicating local high ozone levels were identified, which possibly could be explained by local ozone production, long-range transport, or both. Different general damage levels were identified. The levels were elevated west of Copenhagen and diminished when approaching the City. Possible regional importance of the Airport are discussed. Ozone levels in and around Copenhagen exceeding the American standard are indicated. The plants reacted in full agreement with a log-normally distributed ozone occurrence in ambient air.
