Entisols of the upper basin of the Dilar river (Sierra Nevada) [Spain]

Two Entisol profiles (Orthents) from the inner zones of Sierra Nevada (Granada) have been studied. The first one. Typic Cryorthent, has developed from a wurmian periglacial deposit with several old solifluxion layers parallel to the topographic surface. The soil has an Al horizon (poor in organic matter) and several C horizons. The parent roch is a micaschist and the altitude is 2.840 meters. The second profile, also a Typic Cryothent, is derived from the disgregation "in situ" of a Micaschist, having an Al horizon (poorly organic) and several C horizons formed fisured and disturbed rock. Altitude is 2.780 m. In both cases the vegetation cover is scarce and signals of erosion are detectable on the soil surface. Soil textures are loamy or sandy loam, with high percentages of coarse fragments; organic C contents are low, soil pH is about 6, and base saturations are less than 50%. The mineralogical composition of the non-Clay fraction (greater than 2 microns) is mostly quartz and micas with lesser amounts of chorite, feldspars and Fe-oxihidroxides. The clay fraction is constituted by illite with minor amounts of interstratified minerals, kaolinite, chlorite, montmorillonite and paragonite
