Decontamination of the meat from internally contaminated (Cs-134 and Sr-85) and irradiated sheep

This paper presents the results of investigating the possibilities of decontamination of meat of internally contaminated (Cs-134 and Sr-85) and irradiated sheep. The effect of decontamination was investigated upon 20 samples of meat of the sheep irradiated with semi-lethal (LD 50/30) and lethal (LD 100/30) doses of hard X-radiation and internally contaminated with 3.7 MBq Cs-134 and 7.4 MBq Sr-85 per animal. Ordinary water, salt water (3.5 g NaCl/1 of water), sea water and brine (900 g NaCl,11 gNaNO3, 4 g NaNO2, 25 g of sugar dissolved in 4,600 ml of water) were used as decontamination means. The investigation was performed upon the following muscles:m. longiss. dorsi, m. gastrocnem., m. triceps brach., m. quadriceps and m. gracillis, so that the total sample weighed 250 grams. On the basis of the results obtained the following conclusions were drawn: -Meat samples of the sheep irradiated with sem-lethal and lethal doses of hard X-radiation and internally contaminated with Cs-134 and Sr-85 can be decontaminated successfully with the treatment of dipping them into water and salt solutions. -The best decontamination effect is obtained with dipping the meat into brine and it is 83-91%. -By changing the decontamination means every 24 hours, a better decontamination effect is reached. -All treatments of decontamination showed a better effect in semi-lethally irradiated animals.
