Nine organophosphorus insecticide formulations were evaluated for photodegradation on silica gel G coated TLC plates using a sunlamp. The order of increasing persistency was pirimiphos methyl, tetrachlorvinphos, dimethoate, fenthion, mevinphos, malathion, methyl parathion and triazophos. Half life values of the first two insecticides were not significantly different and neither were the half life values of dimethoate, fenthion, and mevinphos. Significantly different were malathion, methyl parathion, and triazophos. Photodegradation on silica gel for most of the insecticides followed first-order kinetics except for dimethoate and tetrachlorvinphos photodegradation which followed second order kinetics. Diazinon photodegradation may be a mixture of reaction orders. Partial field data on green beans showed strong agreement with laboratory results
