Evaluation of the genetic merit of purebred Jersey and Jersey x Hariana crossbred bulls for first lactation milk yield

The genetic merit of 17 Jersey bulls computed as the least-squares means by using the first lactation milk yield records of their crossbred daughters produced by mating with Hariana cows ranged between 1334 and 1906 kg. The genetic merit of fourty eight Jersey x Hariana halfbred bulls varied between 1066 and 2087 kg. The intra-sire coefficients of variation were higher among the daughters of the crossbred as compared to those of the purebred bulls. The genetic merit of most of the crossbred bulls was low in comparison to the purebred bulls. The average milk yield of the daughters of the top eight crossbred bulls (16%) was comparable with the average milk yield of the daughters of the purebred bulls. It is, therefore, suggested that only genetically superior crossbred bulls identified through progeny testing should be used for breeding to avoid decline in milk yield after inter se matings among crossbreds
