Pollen grains of eight Hibiscus species were investigated under a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The pollen investigated were spherical and echinate with spines all over the pollen grain. And the pollen grains of Hibiscus species were periforated which the apertures were scattered all over the grains. The diameter of Hibiscus mutabilis grain with spines showed larger than the others exclusive of Hibiscus syriacus "Hwabong", and the diameter of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis grain with spines was the second among the investigated species. The pollen grains of single flower type were generally larger than those ones of double flower types. The results revealed that Hibiscus syriacus was divided into two pollen groups by the basis of distorted spine. One group was Hibiscus syriacus "Baikdansim", "Hwahong", and "Yungkwang" according to the distorted spines. The other were Hibiscus syriacus "Oknyo", "Saehan", "Elegantissima". Hibiscus syriacus "Saehan" and "Elegantissima" of double flower type were resembled by the diameter of their grains with the spines, and the number of echinates and apertures. But, the number of hole per 1um and the height of the spines were different each other. It was possible to key out two group except Hibiscus mutabilis and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, however, the great variation of many characters would need to investigate more extensive collections of pollen samples
