Production and marketing practices of cucurbit vegetable farmers and traders in Bulacan [Philippines]

Cucumber farmers received an average price of P3.97 per kilogram. Average production cost was estimated at P1.21 per kilogram while marketing expenses averaged P0.08 per kilogram. Cucumber farmers netted P2.68 per kilogram. Ampalaya farmers registered a gross receipt of P4.00 per kilogram with average production and marketing costs at P1.98 and P0.02 per kilogram, respectively, and net income at P2.00 per kilogram. The average gross income derived from producing gourd was P2.66 per kilogram, average production cost was P1.58 per kilogram with marketing expenses posted at P0.03 per kilogram resulting in average income at P1.05 per kilogram. On the other hand, net income from watermelon was P1.14 per kilogram. Average price received was P2.33 per kilogram while production cost was recorded at P1.18 and marketing expenses at P0.01. For squash, net profit was smaller at only P0.96 per kilogram, average price received was P3.69 per kilogram while production and marketing costs averaged P2.49 and P0.24 per kilogram, respectively. Cucurbit vegetable farmers encountered problems in production such as diseases, capital insufficiency, lack of planting materials and water supply. Majority of the farmers did not complain of marketing difficulties. Those who had marketing problems mentioned low market prices and non-existence of new markets for excess production.
