Four experiments were conducted for two successive years in pots containing a random sample from Sinai and Maryut soils. Each experiment comprised 12 treatments, viz, four NaCl concentrations and three safflower lines. In both tested soils the three genotypes differed in their ability to germinate under high salinity levels. Although most of studied characters showed significant decrease compared with the control when irrigation water contained 6000 p.p.m. NaCl, however, the presence of 2000 p.p.m. NaCl caused insignificant deviation. Salinity levels by genotypes interactions were significant in only 2 out of 20 comparisons done on germination and growth characters. On the other hand, the individual genotypes in general, behaved differently under high salinity levels.
