Identification, pathogenicity and control of damping-off fungi on Benguet pine seedlings [Philippines]

Nine fungi caused damping-off disease of Benguet pine seedlings. These were identified as: Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, Cylindrocladium scoparium Morgan, Curvularia tuberculata Jain, Fusarium oxysporum (Schl.) emend. Snyder and Hasen, F. roseum (Lk.) emend. Snyder and Hansen, Myxotrichum sp., F. moniliforme Sheld. emend. Snyder and Hansen, F. solani (mart.) app.. et Wr. emend. Snyder and Hansen, and Botrytis sp. The effectiveness of eight chemicals, namely: Maneb, Brassicol, Vitigran Blue, Formalin, Vitavax, Arasan 75, Captex, and Tillex and soil sterilization by autoclaving and hot water treatment to control R. solani, C. scoparium, F. moniliforme, F. solani, and F. oxysporum were tested. None of the methods completely controlled any of the five pathogenic fungi. Formalin was the most effective. The other treatments were also effective except for autoclaving on C. scoparium and F. moniliforme; Captex and vitamax on F. solani; maneb, Brassicol, Vitigran Blue, Vitavox and Arasan 75 on R. solani. No morphological abnormalities were observed on treated seedlings. However, treatment with Tillex delayed seed germinations.
