Effects of water stress on the growth and yield of onion

This study was conducted to determine the effects of moisture stress on the growth and yield of onion. The different treatments were as follows: Treatment 1 (control, no water stress), Treatment 2 (stressed for one day), Treatment 3 (stressed for two days), Treatment 4 (stressed for three days), and Treatment 5 (stressed for four days). Treatments 2, 3, 4, and 5 were stressed 39 days after transplanting. Results of the study showed highly significant differences existed on the number of developed bulbs. No water stress (control) produced more bulbs than the stressed plants. Highly significant differences were observed on the weight of bulbs. Plants stressed for one day were the heaviest among all treatments. On the computed yield per hectare, highly significant differences existed. Plant stressed for one day gave the highest computed yield per hectare. On the economic point of view, plants stressed for one day had the highest return per peso cost.
