Observations on vine leaf mites (Calepitrimerus vitis Nalepa) and other sucking pests

The mites, thripses and phylloxera causing damage to grapevines were studied using the soaking method and visual scoring. The mite species Calepitrimerus vitis Nalepa, Eriophyes vitis Pagenstecher, Tetranchus urticae Koch and Pannonychus ulmi Koch are to be found in the majority of vineyards. Anaphotrips vitis Preismer is also present in a number of vineyards throught the vegetation period, in larger populations in spring and autum and with a smaller individual density in summer. Since 1986 the leaf-borne form of phyloxera /Viteus vitifolii Fitch/ has been noted in several fruit-bearing vineyards. In a study on 33 grape varieties, the largest number of galls was found on the leaves of Cserszegi fuszeres. During the vegetation period, various developmental forms of mite species, thripses, phylloxera and scale insets may co-exist on the grapevine leaves. Pannonychus ulmi overwinters in the egg stage, while the other mite species overwinter as fully developed forms. If predictions indicate that the swarming peaks of the various pests will coincide, they can all be controlled with a single preparation /Thiodane 35 EC or Danitol 10 EC/.
