Interspecific hybridization as a method of developing grapevine varieties resistant to low temperatures

To decrease yield fluctuations due to freezing of grape vine, we started a program of development of new white vine varieties based on interspecific hybridization. We resorted to that approach out of a conviction that a radical solution of the problem cannot be reached within the species Vitis vinifera. We commenced the program by collecting a large number of varieties possessing in their genetic background Vitis vinifera and other species of Vitis genus. The varieties Kunleany and Kunbarat, developed by Hungarian breeders Tamasy and Koleda by crossing vinifera varieties with an East Asian species, Vitis amurensis, turned out to be most suitable. In addition to high yielding capacity, these varieties are highly resistant to low temperatures and they have a high capacity to accumulate sugars. After two cycles of selection of eight cross combinations of these varieties with quality Vitis vinifera varieties, we selected six genotypes featuring a number of positive biological and agricultural traits. This paper presents the performances of the selected genotypes gathered over last five years.
