Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used for the estimation of the chemical composition of the surface of lichen and moss thalli in connection with Artic contamination study. No mineral particles or trace metals except titanium were identified on the surface of the examined lichen and moss samples (Cladina stellaris, Cetraria islandica, Masonhalea richardsonii, Hylocomium splendens). By applying different magnifications and area and spot analysis it was established that lichens are capable of trapping fine mineral particles and changing them chemically
