Agricultural extension in Ethiopia can be traced back to 1908 during the reign of Emperor Menelik II. However, modern extension work started in the early 1950s with the establishment of the Alemaya College of Agriculture. In 1963 extension responsibility was transferred from Alemaya to the Minstry of Agriculture (MOA); during this period, on-farm fertilizer trials and demonstrations were conducted throughout the country with the assistance of FAO. Beginning in 1967, comprehensive integrated package projects, such as Chilalo Agricultural Development Unit (CADU) and Wolaita Agricultural Development Unit (WADU) were launched in selected high potential regions. After reviewing the comprehensive packages, it was decided to initiate the minimum package projects (MPPs) under Extension and Project Implementation Department (EPID). The MPPs continued to operate until 1985, when the new extension approach, training (T) and visit (V), was introduced. The Peasant Agricultural development Program (PADEP) followed, adopting a modified version of T and V.
