Use of high density seeds to increase rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The study evaluated the advantage of using high density (HD) seeds, those having a specific gravity greater than 1.20, in establishing a rice crop. Seeds from two cultivars with high density grain index (HDI) and one low-HDI were graded into poor, good and HD grains. The HD seeds from high - HDI cultivars yielded significantly higher than the poor seeds. The increase in yield may be due to higher embryo and endosperm weights, better tillering and vigorous seedling growth of HD seeds. However, in the low-HDI cultivar there was no difference in yield among the seed grades even though the HD seeds manifested significant difference at early growth stage. Selecting HD seeds from a high - HDI cultivar can significantly increase the grain yield of rice.
