Evaluation of the technical and socioeconomic performance of crop intensification and diversification in Guimba, Nueva Ecija (Philippines)

The overall performance of partially irrigated and rainfed rice-based farming and its impact on the level of income of the farm household were determined. Income from rice farming was highest with the deepwell farms and lowest with rainfed. Twenty and 16 percent of shallow well and rainfed farms substantially increased their farm income by growing subsidiary crops during the dry season. Less than one-third engaged in non-farm income contribute a larger proportion to household income than farm income on households that engaged in these activities. Rice production could be profitably raised by as much as 1.2 t/ha/yr in rainfed and 3.0 t/ha/yr in deepwell farms through improved crop husbandry. The realization of these potential benefits require breaking down technical and socioeconomic constraints imposed by the environment, institutions and farm resource scarcity.
