Study was a continuation of previous research began in 1984, which attempted to simplify and to adjust the conventional vaccination program to fit the backyard chicken raising systems in specific locations. In general, this study intended to test the modified vaccination program for multilocational trials. These tests focused on a method of extension as well as on the effectiveness of the vaccination. In particular, this study aimed to prove the hypothesis that given adequate information on the use of chicken vaccines and the availability of the vaccines in the villages, the farmers would adopt the chicken vaccination program. This study was carried out in 8 villages of Khon Kaen and Nong Khai provinces by an interdisciplinary research team. Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) was used as a methodology to understand the farmers' responses to the modified vaccination program and the factors relating to adoption of the vaccines. It was not practical to have the vaccines available in the villages through vaccine dealers. Moreover, the villagers themselves perceived chicken raising as a much less important activity as compared to other farm activities. In addition, the existing backyard chicken raising has been a stable and sustainable system. Also, it has been fitted very well with the objectives of chicken raising for the local people, labor, activities as well as the cultural context. Therefore, it seemed much less likely for the farmers to pay cash on this commodity or to take a prophylactic measure against the disease outbreak for their chickens by adopting the introduced vaccination scheme. As a consequence, suitable target groups are needed to be selected in order to promote the backyard chicken raising. Also, the characteristics of the target group as well as the conditions relating to adoption have to be clearly understood.
