Effect of harvesting time on seed quality and seed yield of groundnut cultivars Tainan 9, SK 38, RCM 387, and NC 2

Effect of harvesting time on seed quality and seed yield of groundnut was studied on four groundnut cultivars, namely SK 38, Tainan 9, RCM 387 and NC 2. Field experiments were conducted at Suwan Farm, Pakchong, Nakorn Ratchasima in the dry season (January to May 1985) and the wet season (May to September 1985). Pod yields and seed yields of the four groundnut cultivars harvested in the dry season were higher than those obtained in the wet season. In the dry season, optimum harvesting time for SK 38 was found to be 74 days after flowering, since this harvesting date gave high percentage of mature pods, low percentage of immature pods, and high seed quality as determined by germination, seed vigor, and field emergence tests. Sixy-seven to 81 days after flowering were the best time for harvesting Tainan 9 groundnut in the dry season, while in RCM 387 and NC 2, harvesting at 79 days and 81 days after flowering resulted in maximum seed yield and seed quality. In the rainy season, maximum yield and the best seed quality were obtained at 67 days and 74 days after flowering in SK 38 and Tainan 9. Whereas in RCM 387, optimum harvesting time was found to be 86 days after flowering, which was one to two weeks after the dry season planting. Maximum seed yield was also found at 79 days after flowering in NC 2, but maximum seed quality was obtained at 79 days and 86 days after flowering.
