On the basis of the experience of the world and author's own research, this paper advocates for the need of building the system of the phytosanation fields (ecofields) on Yugoslav rivers and lakes to function as biofilters which would contribute significantly to the recovering of certain water basins (ecological engineering). The plan relies upon the many positive functions of the waterplants, among which the example of the species of Phragmites communis is particularly striking. The research has been carried out on the rivers of Sava, Danube, Pek, Mlava, Tisa etc. and on the artificial and natural lakes of Batlava, Savsko Jezero, Grosnicko etc. (Yugoslavia).
