The regeneration process of hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata Sieb. et Zucc. var. hondai Makino) in a stand formed after an intensive disturbance affecting a vast area was discussed by means of size, age and spatial dispersion structure. The number of annual rings on a stump showed a broad, continuous distribution from 50 to 250. The mosaic structure, composed of even-aged patches of various phases, was not recognized in the spatial dispersion pattern. The diameter at breast height showed monomodal distribution. The structure described above is presumed to be formed by two processes, 1) hiba seedlings, not only in gaps but all over the forest floor, had been given chances to survive unit the next disturbance because of their abilities to tolerate closed canopies for long periods, and successors of various ages had been accumulating under such canopies, 2) these successors of small size simultaneously began rapid growths after the intensive disturbance
