Further observations on Osmia cornuta Latr. and O. [Osmia] rufa L. as alternative fruit pollinators, domestication and utilization

Osmia cornuta and Osmia rufa are common in southern Europe. Numerous populations live in regions where houses and other premises are covered with reeds in the holes of which they make their nests. The initial populations are relatively easy to collect if suitable nesting materials is placed where there are many nests. These bees nest most readily in paper tubes, wooden blocks and in the holes of the reed. A special attention was paid to the accompanying fauna of these bees: parasites, predators and nest destroyers. If these pests are controlled, populations of Osmia cornuta and Osmia rufa may multiply relatively quickly. The distribution of sexes in tunnels and sex ratio for 1993 and 1994 populations have been shown. Osmia cornuta and Osmia rufa are very efficient pollinators of orchards and some crops in greenhouses.
