The influence of planting dates on seed yield and other agronomic characters of noug

Gojam region ranks first among the major noug growing areas of the country. However, productivity is very low due to many factors, of which planting date is the major one. An experiment was conducted at Adet Research Center in 1987 and 1988 to determine the effect of different planting dates (31 May, 15 June, 30 June and 15 July) on the yielding capacity of improved noug variety, "Sendafa", and a local cultivar. Significant differences between varieties (p less than 0.001) and planting dates (p less than 0.05) were observed on seed yield in both years. The local cultivar yielded 42.1 and 54.6 percent over Sendafa which yielded 5.37 and 2.80 q/ha in 1987 and 1988, respectively. The highest mean seed yields 7.42 (1987) and 4.01 q/ha (1988) were obtained with the last planting date (15 July). Variety by sowing date interaction significantly (p less than 0.05) affected seed yield in 1988 only. With Sendafa the highest yield (6.80 q/ha in 1987 and 3.49 q/ha in 1988) was obtained with 15 July planting while with the local cultivar 15 June and 31 May plantings resulted in the highest seed yield of 8.12 and 4.66 q/ha. In general, an increase in yield was associated with delayed plantings and the optimum planting time ranged between early to mid-July. The local cultivar was taller and later maturing than the improved one. Plant height, days to flowering and maturity decreased dramatically with delayed plantings.
