[Competitive ability of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)]

It was studied which plant characteristics are associated with the competitive ability of the common bean varieties: Canario 107, Jamapa, Flor de Mayo, Negro 150 and Michoacan 150, which were grown in an isolated way and in mixtures of 2, 3, 4 and five varieties. The characters positively associated are: the flowering period; the yield, pods and seeds per plant; the number of harvested plants and seeds per pod. Size and weight of seed, show a negative correlation with competitive ability. Length and number of knots of the main stem do not show association this indicating that potential of the plant is mainly branches than stem.

Se estudiaron las caracteristicas de la planta que estan asociadas con la aptitud competitiva de las variedades de frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Canario 107, Jamapa, Flor de Mayo, Negro 150 y Michoacan 150. Se sembraron tanto solas como en mezclas de 2, 3, 4 y 5 variedades. Los caracteres asociados positivamente son: periodo de floracion, rendimiento, numero de vainas y semillas por planta; numero de plantas cosechadas y semillas por vaina. Tamano y peso de semilla muestran correlacion negativa con la aptitud competitiva. Longitud y numero de nudos del tallo principal no muestran asociacion con la aptitud competitiva, lo cual indica que la produccion de la planta depende mas de las ramas que de su tallo principal.
