Effects of containers, potting media and fertilizers on growth of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh propagules produced through in-vitro cultures

Effects of containers, potting media and fertilizers on growth of the propagules of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh was studied at Forestry nursery, Kasetsart University. Containers, potting media and fertilizers were three factors assigned. Four types of containers were used, Shell containers (made from foam) with and without root grazing chemical, plastic bag with holes at bottom and with holes at its side. Four types of potting media were used, Shell media, soil and coconut dust (1:1), soil and rice ash (1:1) and soil, coconut dust and rice ash (1:1:1). Four types of fertilizers were used, foliar fertilizer, compost fertilizer, osmocote and without fertilizers. The treatments used were 128 treatments with 20 propagules per treatment and 2,560 propagules in total. Propagules height was recorded four weeks after planting and then every two weeks. At the end of the experiment, after fourteen weeks, diameter at root collar and survival rate were investigated. Fifty percent of propagules were sampled to investigate root quality and total biomass. Containers, potting media and fertilizers significantly affected the height, diameter at root collar, survival rate and total biomass of the propagules. Fertilizers showed to affect most the growth of propagules followed by potting media and containers. Osmocote promoted the greatest growth. Shell media was the best potting media. Propagules in Shell container without grazing chemical contained shell media and osmocote performed the best quality of which their average height, survival rate and total biomass were 45.32 cm, 100 % and 1.36 gm respectively but were 35.38 cm, 95 % and 104 gm respectively when foliar fertilizer was applied instead
