The results led to the following conclusions: Oat yields depended more on the year as a factor than on the N rate applied. In addition to weather conditions, the year affected oat yields in terms of the amount and distribution of nitrate N in soil. When the nitrate N content in the layer below 90 cm was about 120 kg/ha at the time of harvest, 30 kg/ha of N from mineral nutrients were sufficient to attain the maximum grain yield. The grain and straw protein content were high, but it did not depend significantly on the N rate applied. The yield of straw was considerably higher than that of grain. The harvest index was relatively low and it decreased with an increase in the amount of N applied. Increasing N rates were shown to increase the number of panicles per square meter and decrease the number of grains per panicle.
