Physico-chemical characteristics of Pongamia glabra seeds were studied. Oil was extracted (42.6 percent) yield by using nhexane as solvent. The seed oil melted at 9 Centigrade and possessed specific gravity 0.92 at 20 Centigrade, refractive index 1.46 at 23 Centigrade and viscosity 64.07 centipoise. The other characteristics were: acid value 2.66, free fatty acid 1.34 percent, saponification value 181.33, ester value 178.67, iodine value 88.69, peroxide value 12.07, unsaponifiable matter 4.98 and Reichert-Meissl value 1.09. The percentage of fatty acids were: oleic acid 48.24 percent, linoleic 22.71 percent, linoleic 22.71 percent, linolenic 5.68 percent, myristic 4.33 percent, palmitic 12.98, percent and stearic acid 6.06 percent. The oil cake contained protein 26.9 percent, crude fibre 4.17 percent, ash 9.61 percent, NFE 59.31 percent, calcium 0.44 percent and phosphorus 0.45 percent.
