Effects of crossing different breeds of pigs to improve meat production

The aim of this unvestigation was to establish the effects of cross-breeding of various swine breeds (Swedish Landrace - SL, Great Yorkshire - GJ, Danish Landrace - DL, German Landrace -GL, and Durock - D), and to make an estimation of phenotypical correlation between the meat percentage in more important carcass cuts and carcass sides. The genotype of fattening swine was found to influence the variability of following traits: daily weight gain, dressing percentage, weight of muscle, fat and bone tissue of a leg, mass of muscle and fat tissue of shoulder, mass of loin, MLD, whole muscle and bone tissue in loin, quantity and percentage of meat in sides. The crosses DL x GJ, and DL x (SL x GJ) had by 0.84 and 0.35 kg more meat in leg than average in all other investigated fatteners. They also had by 1.43 and 0.94 kg more meat in leg than fatteners G4 SL x (SL xGJ). The fatteners G3 (DL x GJ) had by 2.13 - 2.68 more meat in comparison with all investigated animals. The coefficient of phenotypic correlations between the mass of meat in leg, shoulder, MLD, loin, and quantity of meat in sides were: 0.862***, 0.683***, 0.621***, and 0.586***, respectively.
