Impact of technological factors on fermentation and quality of silage
1999
Laettemae (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
Three different storage systems are usually used on silage making. Trench silage has been a common system for a long time. Relatively new technologies that farmers started to use are clamp -and big bale silage. Bale silage is usually made of unchopped or restricted cut grass. Such kind herbage may be difficult to ensile due to delay in fermentation or material heterogeneity. It is also difficult to achive sufficient density of silage and mix additive in such material. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of baler type, number of layers of plastic film and use of additives on quality of big bale silage. Another task of this study was to compare different storage systems - trench, clamp and big bale silages from quality point of view
