Effects of ultraviolet-B irradiated rice plants on the growth and development of the rice leaffolder, Marasmia patnalis Bradley

The effect of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiated rice leaves on the growth and development of the rice leaffolder, Marasmia patnalis Bradley was investigated. Two experiments were conducted using UV-B irradiated whole rice plants and detached leaves. Results showed that UV-B irradiated 44-day old leaves of whole plants had lower levels of phenolic content and were feeding stimulant to the test insects. UV-B irradiated detached 22-day old leaves had higher phenolic content and antifeedant and growth inhibitory to the larvae. Adults reared on older whole plants irradiated with UV-B laid fewer eggs. The reduction in the number of eggs suggests that the effects of these kinds of compounds were crucial at the later growth and developmental stages. Results derived from this study encouraged further investigation to determine the effect of partially-purified and purified extracts of UV-B irradiated leaves on the test insect
