Pathogenicity of some pycnidial fungi on faba bean seeds

In the course of pathological tests conducted at the Agrobotanical Centre, Tapioszele, Greece, several pycnidial fungi were isolated from various hosts including faba bean and other leguminous plants. Twenty isolates of 11 species were tested on seeds of Vicia faba L. The highest rates of seedling symptoms and decayed seeds resulted from infecting the seeds with Ascochyta fabae Speg. Ascochyta pisi Lib., Coniothyrium fuckelii Sacc., Phoma exigua var exigua Desm., Phoma medicaginis Malbr. and Roum, and Phoma medicaginis Malbr. and Roum var pinodella (Jones) Boerema also caused symptoms on seedlings and seeds; however, the following produced either no symptoms, or only sporadic symptoms: Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Lab., Ascochyta viciae Lib., Phoma glomerata (Corda) Wollenw. and Hochapf., Phoma herbarum var medicaginis Westend., and a Phoma sp. obtained from the phylloplane of V. faba
