Contribution to hyperinfusion therapy in chronic obstructive bronchitis in horses

The paper examines the effect of hyperinfusion therapy on horses suffering from chronic obstructive bronchitis. Over a period of four years, hyperinfusion therapy was administered to 42 horses. Prior to therapy, depending on the value of partial oxygen pressure, the horses were divided into four groups according to the (degree) gravity of the disease. Following detailed anamnestic, clinical, laboratory, and endoscopic examinations, three-hour hyperinfusion therapy was administered with 0.9% NaCl in doses of 6 litres/100 kg/h. Therapy was repeated within three days. Hyperinfusion therapy led to a significant increase in partial oxygen pressure in arterial blood in all levels of chronic obstructive bronchitis. The total mean increase in partial oxygen pressure was from 83.47 mmHG to 94.12 mmHg. As a result of therapy, there was a significant reduction in partial carbon-dioxide pressure in blood of horses with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th degree of chronic obstructive bronchitis. The total reduction of partial carbon-dioxide pressure was from 43.99 mmHg to 40.47 mmHg. Hyperinfusion therapy also caused a significant reduction in the alveolar-arterial difference in partial oxygen pressure in all levels of chronic obstructive bronchitis. The total mean decrease was from 21.12 to 13.79 mmHg.
